NOISE
“All of humanity’s problems grow out of man’s inability to sit in silence alone in a room.”
Blaise Pascal
Spiritual teachers also talk about the same thing–the importance of silence within oneself in order to be successful. But first, let’s start with the noise, the noise around us.
Over the last half century, living in an age of urbanization and technocratic development, people have become accustomed to the constant presence of all kinds of sounds, not at all of natural origin. It would be wonderful if it were only the singing of birds, the murmuring of water, the rustling of leaves, but unfortunately this is not the case.
Instead of these beautiful sounds, in the cities we hear noise from the roads, running machinery, loud music, howling sirens, neighbors doing repairs, for some reason all year round. And yet, noise plays a huge role, negatively affecting our health, both physical, mental and emotional.
Surprisingly, we are already used to it, and few people are distracted by these extraneous noises from business conversations on the terrace or in the park, from cell phone calls, and even from sleeping. But… even if we have got used to this horror it does not cancel the harm that this cacophony of sounds brings to human health, state of mind and soul. These sounds affect our irritability, fatigue during the day, poor sleep at night, they also cause a decrease in mental abilities and memory, increase aggression and even man-hating, no matter how scary it may sound.
Medical research confirms a strong correlation of many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and many others, to the lifestyle associated with urban noise.
There is such a concept as the “Dopamine Loop”, it is when there is no completeness in what a person does, no satisfaction with what is being done. So, the “dopamine” hormone is directly affected by noise. The stress hormone rises and the general state of nervousness increases with each day spent in the hum of traffic.
Even being in the dacha, people can not exclude the noise: the lawnmower works and the loud sound of the TV, so it can be heard in the garden.
Dependence on gadgets. Many people, when they wake up in the morning, immediately reach for gadgets to turn on music or something else familiar, instead of meditating or spending the first minutes after waking up in silence with themselves.
Thus, noise is a direct factor in our poor quality of life.
To avoid all those “charms” with which the modern way of life rewards us, we not only need to escape from urban noise by moving to the countryside with a healthier environment, or at least to small towns where there is less noise, but also to educate ourselves about the use of gadgets by getting rid of dependence on them.
Let me repeat that first of all we need to minimize the impact of external noise. Secondly, to go further, to create inner harmony, confidence, tranquility, which cannot be measured by any banknotes of money, we need to immerse ourselves, but that is the subject of our next conversation.
